I have started and stopped on a number of occasions to make a 3D Zombicide Black Plaque board. Several answers to questions I had did not really work out that well in application. How do I handle doors/walls/windows when they aren’t required with either an opening or lack of an opening in the wall? Another question, do I keep the tiles the same size or make them bigger? I tried to keep them the same size, but with sometimes 15+ zombies in a 3” square before the walls take up additional space, we would just end up piling them inside. So, make the tiles/squares bigger… but just how much bigger? They are approximately 3” now… so if I make them 4” square AND add walls, then they are effectively 3” square…
So the answer staring me in the face was to make them 5” square. Now, I have 15” square boards to transport, store, and handle. Also, I would need to make the tiles such that the “temporary” doors that go in walls could be filled in with either windows or solid walls. So the next step was to lay out all the tiles, go through the scenarios, and identify openings, doors, walls, etc.
103 Outdoor tiles squares
95 Indoor tiles
198 total 5”x5” tiles
But wait! What if I went through the scenarios and counted up the individual outdoor tiles and building groups that I would need?
And… if I made just the building parts and pieces instead of the full square, the largest single piece I would need to make would be the 2x3 rooms, ( 10” x 15” piece), a few 1x3 rooms (5”x15”) and a lot more of the 1x2 (5”x10”) and some 1x1 tiles/rooms (5”x5”).
Looking at the core game and Wolfsburg expansion scenarios, I would need:
39 Outdoor tiles (64 tiles less…)
66 Indoor building “clusters” of various sizes… (29 tiles less…)
105 Tiles total… 98 tiles LESS than making the full tile.
Now this is getting to be a bit more manageable in terms of storage size and weight.
