Hi folks, wanted to pop up a quick review of the plaster I've been working with.
I got lucky, I live in an industrial part of town and quite literally live across the street from an industrial/medical gypsum plaster supplier. Talked to one of their sales people and explained what I was doing and what I needed, and tossed around a few of the names of the other products used.
He gives me a 50 pound sample bag of Densite K-16. It's a dental mold plaster, 9-10K psi. Apparently many of the industrial places nearby use it for tool and die molding. Using the "wet water" method with this plaster has yielded amazing results - details are very sharp. Sets for scraping in about 5-10 minutes, can be demolded in 30-45, 2 hours in the dehydrator and its set. Very sturdy, sands well, and is a pale grey color.
I've also used the Densite K-5 which is a lighter (7-8K PSI) and is white (its the most common plaster used for surgical casts) and gets similar results.
Densite is made by Georgia-Pacific so just googling G-P Distributors in your area should find you a source. When I bought more K-16 it was ~$35 a 50 pound bag and the K-5 was ~$25.
