Turbolift Tubes Small update July 10 09 |
Lead | |
|
Hey everyone. Well, I have not posted for a little while now. I have just been uber-busy with work. I still have been casting, and painting, just not as much
as I would like. I am working on a huge project right now, but I want to get some more done before I start posting it up! I think some of the old
timers around here will really get a kick out of it. Anyway, I thought I would share this with everyone, since I came up on the boards boasting of how the
Sci-Fi theme would soon take over....

Nicely done R2builder. I bet your mate will be well chuffed. The colours are not exactly my own cup of tea, but if your friend's mining facility calls for
a bit of grime, you've almost nailed it. If it was my model I think I would have aimed for a more consistant colouration across the internal curve of the
lift-shaft. However, easier said than done with the sci-fi range.

Thanks for the comments Scousey. I was going for a beat p grimmy look. I figured anything in a mining colony/facility won't be looking too good. Hell, I'm a mechanic, and I know how shops and equipment can get.... In my friend's game, I'm not exactly sure what "they" are supposed to be mining, spice, crystals, coal!? I would like to find out and try to add alittle bit of the debris on the floor, like if was crystals, maybe try to put some ground up colored glass on the floor or what not. I am not really pleased with the yellow "lights" on the front top, I didn't realize that my paint was so sloppy, I need to go back and try to clean that up, but I was really trying to get a brighter look from it. I painted it with multiple coats of bright yellow, then topped it off with gloss varnish. But I didn't really get the look I was aiming for. I have been a mini painter for a long time, and I have to say, that it is a lot different painting Hirst plaster models than painting metal, or even plastic minis. I will get it down though! Again, thanks. My next project I want a really clean looking build and paint job. Of course it will be sci-fi, but I don't want the old used "Star Wars" look of the Falcon, I want more of an imperial clean look. I think that will be really hard to paint and get the details brought out. Well, again thanks for the feedback! R2builder |

I've recently been watching Star Trek Enterprise, and wondering what their greys and blues would look like in miniature. I really should get my finger out
and try some colour schemes. It's a long time since I've glued any sci-fi together, and that's mostly because I have never managed to find a scheme
I've been happy with. I also came to the conclusion that I needed to spray paint the sci-fi stuff to get anywhere near a good standard.

OK, Uk, instead of gloating about your super-uber-awesome-better-than-my-paint-job
And Actually I didn't send Fat Gamorrean anything. I saw his stuff on Wizards, and in his name tag it says he lives in K-town, which is like 10 min.
from me. So we actually met. Did you guys know that all those "people" on the internet are actaully real!? Who woulda' thunk it. Anyway, we have
hung out a few times, and I gave him some cargo containers, then another time I gave him some doors, and some other pieces. He doesn't realize my evil and
hidious plan yet to convert him to the Dark Side, the Dark Side of the Hirsts....He will turn, oh yes, he will turn, or DIE...oh, uh, sorry for the over the
top spaceopera there.... He is also one of my RPG players. So that is pretty cool. I think he is trying to convert to the mini game....Well see about that
later. I think I would rather build all the crap for the games, than actually play it. I know, I'm wierd like that. Well, anyway UK, WHERES THE PICS!!!!!
Well, later on man.

Hmm... I read the title and thought of Star Trek turbolifts - they are remarkably similar
I wouldn't fret the paint job too much - the camera magnifies the errors. I'm certain it looks great in person. G--

Hi R2,
Sorry if you took offence R2, it wasn't meant like that at all.

Sorry UK, I thought the smileys and that I said it was sarcasm was enough to infer that I was joking with you. I know you weren't being mean or
anything, I was just playing around, hence the smileys and that I said it was sarcasm. Sorry didn't mean to offend you in thinking that you had offended
me...stoopid keyboards don't really let in the "joking voice"...I took no offence by what you said Wow, I checked out your site! Very cool indeed. Very clean looking. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing your pics! I always need new ideas, and
inspiration. That is the great think about the boards, everyone has different tastes, likes, ideas, and ways to do things, and no one is WRONG in what they do,
but we can share and learn from each other, and take our hobby to the next level. I really like your builds, it gives me some great ideas for my next project
paint job. Again, thanks for sharing, and sorry for the joke and friendly sarcasm not coming through clearly. Cheers UKdane!

Thanks R2,
I read that it was sarcasm, but just wanted to make clear, that I wasn't criticising. You're right we do all learn and inspire each other, heck I took your idea for the detention center, and adapted it. To answer your questions. The two big circles are in fact the same colour, it's a trick of the light that they look different. The "base" colour is actually darker than in the pics too. I cast with "stone plaster" bought from Panduro Hobby (it's a little stronger than regular PoP). Thanks for your kind words about my site. It's actually not very pretty, and a bit of a mess. I just wanted somewhere to upload and host pics as easily as possible. I need to sort through it, and get it more presentable.

Me too! I built a turbolift for my sci-fi arena. It can be seen in several pictures in that old thread, but the best view is probably this:
I guess I end up somewhere in the middle, dirt-wise, but then I have a bunch of reliable cleaning bots running the facility! |

Here is a pic or two from my bud's building for his SW mini game. He calls it the mining colony uplink station. He will be bringing it by tomorrow, so I
will take a couple of photos of them together. Here is a link to his 3D terrain, in case anyone is interested. http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1015676

Hey guys...
All these constructs are fine... I imagine that each starship or each moonbase don't belong the same "home maid". Anyway, as I allready said, Sci-fi themes aren't my main subject of interest. But, when I saw these "turbo lift", it remember me the big laser gates in Star Wars episode I, while Darth Maul fights Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan... Do you ever try to place two of these structures one in front of the other ? I'm curious to see what would be the result So... Up to your molds and your plaster, guys... And "May the Force be with you" |

Interesting and creative use of some of the blocks in the uplink station!

Well, I went back and modified my paint job somewhat. I do agree that it was kind of dark, and perhaps too dirty looking. I added in some corrosion spots and
silver flecking, you can't really see the silver too much in the pics. I also took some pics of Fat Gamorrean's uplink station and my turbo lift
together. I tried to match his rust look and color as much as I could from the pics that I had. I have to say, I think they go pretty darn good together. Let
me know what you guys think! Thanks.

The rust effect adds so much more character to the piece. Good job!

R2, nice build.
If you are one who just wants to show off his pieces, and doesn't want input on how to make them better, or our opinions, then please skip anything after this sentence and move on after "R2, nice build". If you are one who wants an opinion, and realize that this is just my opinion and you can take it however you want, but that I wouldn't bother commenting if I didn't want to try to help you... then keep reading I think you should have your buddy show you how he painted his... The sci fi pieces are very hard to paint and have them look good. Drybrushing just doesn't look too good on them IMO. Your piece definitely looks better from a further vantage point. It is painted just fine, I'm not saying it is terrible... but it just doesn't look real. It looks "off" somehow. It is a hard piece to look good I think... I think it is the blues and yellows that don't do it for me... they look out of place when what I want to see are crisp lights and uniformly painted walls. Maybe a wet blend would look better? Willypold's paint looks very nice... your friends looks "dirty" but pretty good IMO. Again, please don't take this as a "your paint job sucks"... it doesn't. I can see you put a lot of effort into it and I could certainly do no better... I guess I am only commenting to help you make it look better. Like I said above, if you don't want to hear "it could be better" or "my opinion" please forget you read this... but I really am trying to help, not hurt. Anadas, thanks to you too. I don't spend my time making, gluing, painting, and posting pictures on the forum to say Hey everyone look at how awesome I am at this hobby! Respectfully, R2builder |
