Like I said. The Encounters 4e version was better (and more true to the original) than the commercial 4e campaign, though not as long. Even then, it fell short of the 1E version. My MO for the 1E version, was come prepared with a stack of 6-8 characters, and hope the DM is creative enough to work each of them in as they are needed (meaning when your characters attempt to venture into the demon's mouth, or slide down a ramp into the elimental chaos).

My favorites were the gender-changing arches.

The whole point was to see how well you could RP a character's death, and feign surprise when your new character sees the dead body of the old character.
