By using the clay you can include guide points (for me, usually by pressing the round end of a pencil into the first lot of clay) along the edge of the clay. This ensures that your resulting two-part mould connects perfectly and obviously. Without the guide points -- so the two halves of the mould are flat where they touch -- you are much more likely to get a mould line around your cast bust.
