Most goals for this week were complete with the exception of cutting the roof section for around the conical roof. I probably would have had that done as well, but I actually just forgot about it. Instead I was sidetracked with some more slate painting tests which didn't result in anything I was overly impressed by.
The deck/stair floor was finished and installed:
As I was looking where to install the next stair section, I found I was sort of out of space. The next stair section may need to go out in the hallway (where you can see an extra stair section laying next to the fireplace) and just be a straight run rather than an L corner installation. I thought I had it planned out and it would work to keep the stairs all above each other, but the door to the deck seems to have thrown a monkey wrench into that plan. There might still be enough length to run on the wall on the right of the room, but it will probably be too cramped with the landing from the stairs below coming up to that wall as well. The big door on the adjacent wall takes too much of the L away to do what was done on the levels below. Anyway, I'll need to experiment with that.
I do plan on adding some sort of wood railing around the deck to cap it off and give it a more finished look.
The wall sections were all glued in and the seams plastered & painted. I was a bit nervous that not everything would fit quite right, but it all turned out pretty well.
Adding slate to the dormer sections was a lot of work, but they turned out fairly well I think. There are still several dormer sections left to do on the next floor, but fortunately I'm done with the most complex one - the section with two dormers.
The 5th floor didn't get much attention, but the MDF for the floor was cut several weeks ago and the interior wall lines are all drawn out. The floor section was test fitted and was found to line up fairly well with the walls of the floor below it.
I really need to figure out a paint scheme as I'm unable to glue any of the roof sections to the rest of the structure until they are painted. Although Bruce's gray scheme doesn't look bad, I was hoping to add a little color or just give it a different look. I'll probably spend some time doing some test pieces with all of the slate scraps I now have laying around.
Here is what is on the agenda for this week:
1. Cut out roof section surrounding the conical roof and apply slate.
2. Add some timbers to the dormer sections to finish them up.
3. Cut the exterior 5th floor foam board walls.
4. Cut & score the 5th floor balsa floor.
