I had hopes of getting all of the half-timber walls attached to the 2nd and 3rd floors this past week, but fell just short of the goal. I really only had two building sessions for this project this week so I'm happy to have gotten done what I did.
The two corner pieces on the 2nd floor are pretty much done minus some touch-ups. Quite a bit of the 3rd floor is finished with just a little more painting to do and a few more timbers to add. The corner roof section which goes above the 2nd floor corner piece on the left still needs to be worked on.
Below are some quick snapshots I took to show the current status. The lighting isn't great, but you can still get a feel for how things are shaping up.
Here is an overview of the front:

I did pick up some oil-based stain to try to enhance the floor a bit. It seems to be much better after touching things up, but the oil based stain really has a bad odor that lingers for some time...
Sorry about the extreme Dutch angle on this one (tilted). An attempt to correct it resulted in having to crop off too much of what I wanted to show. You can see the area where the corner roof needs to go.
Here is another shot that has all of the layers placed on top of it to give an idea of what is left vs what is nearly complete.
Same thing, but from the front angle.
Here is a shot from the miniature's perspective near the well at the top of the path:
Looking at the front balcony which is above the service entrance:
I also worked on some getting some of the fireplace detail work done. The hot coal / fireplace combo will need to be completed so it can be tied into the walls before they are glued in place. That is basically top priority for this week next to preparing and applying the rest of the timbers for the 3rd floor. The 3rd floor corner roof section should also get done, but left unpainted as the color scheme is still up in the air. Speaking of roof sections, I didn't complete a single cast this week. I don't plan to do any this week and instead focus my time into getting the half-timber completed. I'm still a ways away from needing a large amount of roof tiles and I should be able to cast up what is needed in the next couple weeks.
Gluing the 4th floor half-timber pieces together and getting them spackled is on the radar, but I may need to just be satisfied with just getting the 3rd floor walls attached to the model so construction on that layer can be considered 'done'. Of course, a few dozen balsa doors and other details need to be done, but the structural construction itself will be complete.
Any opinions on how I should do windows for this model? One option is to just add a little sill to each window like I did in the
Border Guard House
:
Another option would be the 'leaded glass' with wood sill I did for the
Water Mill
:
(the leaded glass is actually semi-transparent, but it is dark inside)
Shutters or something of that nature would be an option too like I did for the
Greentree Inn
:
Should the half-timber and stone framed windows both be treated the same?
I'll likely wait to finish the windows until pretty much everything else is done so there is some time to ponder this decision. Getting an idea in mind beforehand would be good though. I'm leaning towards leaded windows at this point in time - at least for the half-timbered windows...
Well, that is all for this week. Thanks for your continued support and feedback!
