Steve, I have been using Merlin's for about a year now and find that it is so far superior to pop that it isn't even funny. White would be the way to go because the colorant is oil-based and can cause micro-bubbles, but a good coat of base color can usually hide them - but then the reason to buy it colored is to avoid the necessity of base painting. I have never noticed a problem with variation in colors and I've used the lt.grey and tan versions but I think the white is a bit nicer. The only drawback to Merlin's is the shipping costs which, depending on where you live, can double the cost. I am currently experimenting with a product called Rockite which I can get locally and reaches a compression strength of about 8000psi within 7 days - or so they claim - so its only slightly less than some of the other products available. I am totally unable to get hydrostone or hydrocal locally - or any where in the state for that matter - so I either have to order in Merlin's or find an alternative, but then I don't build for gaming so the strength is less of a factor for me, but pop just doesn't have the strength to even allow you to de-mold some of the more "fragile" pieces. So if the shipping cost doesn't bother you definately go for the Merlin's
