A big can of latex flat house paint does wonders as a combination sealer and base coat. I prefer a medium brown or gray, depending on the look of the stonework I want, then add a dark "wash" of cheap latex acrylic craft paint diluted roughly 1:1 or a shade thinner with water.
I typically use either a deep brown wash on a gray basecoat, or else a dark gray or slightly thinner black wash on a brown base. This ends up looking quite a bit darker than you'd typically want your final piece to be, but the dry brushed (or dry sponged) highlight ends up brightening the final result by a lot. Dabbing a bit of cream, light gray, or sandstone paint onto a chunk of dry sponge, and squeezing it into the pores of the sponge before rubbing it over the project, gives you a little bit of a "reservoir" of paint. You can get different "shades" by pressing harder or lighter against the piece. A cheap craft paint is perfect for this application, since coarser grained pigment actually adds to the texture.
Sometimes, using two slightly different colors of highlight can give a lot more life to the finished work, if done subtlely. If overdone, it usually looks fake and terrible.
I generally look for "mistakes" or "abandoned" custom color paint cans at the local DIY home center, where you can sometimes find a gallon of paint for $5 or less. The base coat only shows through slightly by the time all of that other stuff is applied, but it does give the piece an "underlying" tone, so any "approximate" shade within reason will work.
