I use my terrain for Warhammer Fantasy, Warhammer 40K, Space Hulk and D&D (occasionally).

As to the cheapest way to get into the hobby that can be complicated. You can do a lot with one or two molds. What molds depends on what line you want to get into and what kind of models you're going to build. Some suggestions for each of the lines are below. Keep in mind that these will make some pretty basic pieces and that by adding one accessory mold you can really boost the possibilities, but you can always add more molds later. I think most of us started out with only a couple (or 5) molds and bought more later.

Fieldstone:
Fieldstone Wall #70 - basic fieldstone blocks.
Flagstone Floor Tile Mold #260 - basic fieldstone floors.
OR Cracked Floor Tiles Mold #203 - looks great with fieldstone as well.

Gothic:
Dungeon Builder #45 - Some basic blocks, some arches. Good for dungeons and other buildings.
Floor Tiles Various Sizes Mold #201 - Basic chipped stone floor tiles.

Egyptian:
Egyptian Basic Block Mold #95 - Basic sandblasted blocks.
Egyptian Floor Tile Mold #290 - basic sandblasted floor tiles.

Sci-Fi:
Starship Wall Mold #301 - some basic walls
Starship Deck Mold #270 - basic carpet floors. the plain carpet tiles also work well for cement.

I completely agree with nytflyr on the plaster. Do not use Plaster of Paris you will regret it later when your buildings tear up when someone sneezes on them (slight exaggeration). I use Hydrostone because it's actually cheaper for me than PoP and I can get it locally so I don't have to pay shipping. You can check out Gypsum Solutions web site if you're in the US to see if there's a distributor near you to get Hydrostone.
