I was having problems finding dry tempra paints to dye my densite 4. So I thought I would try a couple of other things. I had some liquid concrete dye. That
was a disaster! The casts never did cure and I had to virtually pressure wash the molds to clean them. I also tried some red Rit Dye. These samples cured but
it tripled the curing time.

what was the ratio of rit dye to plaster that you used? you may have needed to add a little salt to the mix to help with the casting time

The concrete dye I have (but haven't tried) is meant to be used on cured concrete, not in the mix.
And I haven't tried it because it is horribly nasty, corrosive stuff that can't be around metal. I don't know if I want it around me. |

I posted a product on the review page a while ago that is a concrete dye that I have been happy with in conjunction with Hydrostone. I don't know how it
would work with Densite though. The stuff I use is not caustic and I have not noticed any staining of my molds or any adverse reaction to it. I don't
think it has changed the drying / demold time either.
Well try as I might I can't find the link I was looking for. I will have to look the product up again later this evening and I will link it here.

I tried this stuff http://www.quikrete.com/productlines/CementColor.asp in black (or
charcoal I think they call it). Seemed to work ok...I used very very sparingly and did not see any significant increase in curing time or any staining to the
molds. I used about 4 drops in 200g of plaster and got a nice mid grey.

I have a bottle of the Quikrete stuff, too, in reddish, but haven't used it yet. It was recommended to me by somebody who knew my application. But still,
it remains second-hand recommendation until I try it. Maybe I'll give it a go this weekend and report back here.

Did you use liquid RIT or the powder?
I have been successful using cheap black acrylic craft paint mixed into ready to pour plaster. |

The Quikrete is what I use. I bought the red and just give a squirt into my water. I started out by using about 4 to 6 drops and now just give it a random
amount. It makes the Hydrostone come out sort of a Terra Cotta color. By using a random amount my blocks have a variety of colors so that is kind of nice.

I tried the Quikrete red cement colorant, and it did increase the plaster setting times noticably for Hydrocal or Hydrostone. The plaster mix quickly got
"lumpy", but the blocks took almost double the normal time to harden sufficiently for demolding. The pieces came out of the mold in a beautiful
shade of "terracotta" red, perfect for the Clay Tile Roof mold. Unfortunately, when they fully dried, they lightened up to a slightly pale pastel
shade which gives the "impression" of clay tile, but still needs painting for the "full effect". At least it would look better than bright
white plaster if chipped.

I just use cheap tempra paint I found at the dollar store in a squeeze tube in my mix water. The black gives it enough of a gray tint for my tastes.
